BALANCE SHEET
- The sheet provides a snapshot view of the financial condition of the firm at the end of the reporting period.
- It does not provide information on the expenses, revenues and cash. Gross revenue is on the income statement.
- This sheet contains assets, liabilities and retained earnings.
- Including purchasing automobiles, boats, planes
- When cash is received (ex; issuing a bond), it increases current assets.
- When bonds are issued, it increases total liabilities since it's an increase in long-term debt, and it DOES NOT affect shareholder equity as the cash received offsets the liability
- DECLARING VS PAID DIVIDENDS
- DECLARED DIVIDENDS
- Liabilities are increased when they are declared
- These are not yet paid, so it would increase current liabilities and decrease working capital
- Increases total liabilities(pending obligation)
- Reduces shareholder's equity because retained earnings would be decreased by the dividend
- Does not affect total assets
- PAID DIVIDENDS
- Affected total assets because it decreases when it's paid
- EQUATIONS
- Total Assets = Total liabilities + Total shareholders(or owners) equity
